Abstract
In this article, the author considers the key aspect of Alexandr Stich’s methodology in the field of literary criticism: motif analysis of literary texts as a means of their transtextual interpretation. Part 1 deals with the term “motif ” in Stich’s works and with the relevant terminology. Part 2 is dedicated to intertextuality. The theory of intertextuality developed by Jiří Homoláč helps the author to critically analyze Stich’s intertextual practice: his transition from architextuality to intertextuality and extensive (re)construction of transtextual relations. In part 3, the author analyses diverse modes of transtextuality used as an interpretive instrument in Stich’s study Seifertova Světlem oděná (1998). In the last part, the broader theoretical context of Stich’s work is considered. His method is remarkable not only for its ingenious, although in some respects controversial, conception of trans/intertextuality, but also for the emphasis both on the text analysis and on the social and cultural context.
