Orbis scholae is an academic journal published by Charles University, Prague. It features articles on school education in the wider socio-cultural context. It aims to contribute to our understanding and the development of school education, and to the reflection of teaching practice and educational policy.

abstract
Th e paper is based on the standard present-day school (curricular) documents. It concentrates on a detailed analysis of the category of aims and also on the categories of competence and key competence. It aims at the explanation of the importance of these categories for the concept of education. It also refers to the relation of this issue to a number of specific contemporary phenomena concerning the general philosophical/ anthropological question: talking about education, what conceptions of the world and man do we have in mind?
