Abstract
Japanese Perception of Space This study focuses on the Japanese way of space formation and perception of space. The topic of Japanese space is being discussed at different levels. Broader framework is represented by space defined in terms of civilization and culture, which is being decomposed into different types of space: space qualified by geographical means, space in relation to time constant, social space and residential space such as city and village, space identified throught its heritage or the space represented by collective memory. Such a picture of Japanese space and space perceptions serves to comparison of both the differencies and similarities that leads to better understanding of mechanism of spatial strategies. For example, the presented example of Japanese city of Hiroshima as a space being representantive of collective memory (space as a place of memory) challenges to comparison with other similar places hit by a tragedy, which offers an image of experiencing the past and dealing with the history.
