Abstract
Giddens' approach to personal identity represents yet another sociological attempt to analyse the character of the social process of self-knowledge. Alongside Berger's phenomenological approach, therefore, we now have to reckon with Gidden's attempt to emphasis the duality of hermeneutics and reflexivity. In Gidden's theory, his approach to personal identity is incorporated into his efforts to find a new connection between the micro and macro spheres. It is typical of Giddens's work that here he introduces great many neologisms and, for instance, a phenomenological stress on the dialectics of subjective and objective reality is replaced by reflexivity at different levels. This article successively presents personal identity on the four basic levels that interest Giddens: its connection with trust and the transformation of intimacy, its reconstruction including the problem of life styles, and finally the concept of the body in the reflective project of personal identity.
