Art and Historicity in Early Patočka Patočka’s works on art are rarely considered by philosophers, but, when they are, they are usually Patočka’s writings from the 1960s. In this article, the author discusses the problem of art and the aesthetic experience in Patočka’s work with regard to his early writings from the 1930s. These essays have not yet to receive the attention they deserve, even though it is here that the topics of history and education related to art are first discussed. This article analyses the relationships among art, history, and education in Patočka’s early essays. In the first part of the article, the author explores Patočka’s early conception of historicity and its inspiration in Heidegger’s philosophy. The second part of the article shows not only the consequences of Patočka’s conception of historicity in art, but also its shortcomings. The author argues that Patočka’s conceptions of art, history, and education in this period are very vague. In effect, Patočka’s original approach remains only a sketch. But the author believes that a better understanding of Patočka’s early works and concepts can shed light on his later works.
