Abstract
The Composer Adrian Leverkühn This essay focuses on Adrian Leverkühn, the composer-protagonist of Thomas Mann’s novel Doktor Faustus (1947). The author mainly considers Mann’s description of the work of this fictitious composer, and points out that this description reflects Mann’s understanding of the crisis in contemporary music, culture in general, and society. In particular, the essay undertakes a comparison of Leverkühn’s work and contemporary music in Germany, and attempts to reconstruct Mann’s view of the development of German music in the first half of the twentieth century. The last part of the essay is devoted to Mann’s writing method, which is a montage in which both real people and fictitious characters appear. The author compares the results of Mann’s work with the works of other authors who have taken a similar approach to the same theme or a related one, that is, the deal with the Devil.
