Abstract
The article looks into the social situation and mainly social changes taking place in Muslim countries from several theoretical perspectives each providing a different answer as to the question of their institutional and value similarity or compatibility with respect to Western societies. By means of a critical presentation of conceptions by S. Huntington, F. Fukuyama, F. Zakaria, A. Etzioni and M. Chatami, S. Eisenstadt, S. Arjomand, D. Lerner or R. Inglehart, the author offers various points of view on the nature of differences between Western and Near Eastern societies and their transformation in the course of modernization in the direction of either cultural convergence or divergence.
