Abstract
This text considers the dual economy approach, which conceives the economy and employment market as dual structures that are divided into the different segments of centre and periphery. The basic elements of the dual model are the dual economy, which represents the organisational structure of capital, the dual employment market, which represents the organisation of work in capital structures, the effects of the employment market on workers and the assignment of jobs on the basis of race, gender and ethnic groups. The article argues that the ideas of the dual approach are also applicable to the analysis of new forms of flexible production and work organisation. The concept of the new dualism of the employment market is focused on the effects of new forms of work organisation and changes in employment relations on workers in different flexible organisations. These include above all wage polarisation, work insecurity, the reduction of protection for employees and the weakening of the negotiating position of union organisations. As early as the beginning of the 1980s John Goldthorpe pointed out that the search for flexibility on the part of companies might actually lead to an increase in the duality of the employment market, and also to social duality.
