Abstract
The introduction gives a concise survey of ideas concerning the language in confrontation with Engels's ideas. It aims at pointing out Engels's foresight in the conception of the language concerning the most basic issues of the linguistic science. They are the question of the origin and genesis of the language and the question of the connection between language and thinking and social practice. The fact that Engels always investigated the language in connection with certain social, political, ethnolinguistic and other social phenomena witnesses that his ideas can contribute to the Marxist oriented sociology of the language even today. The individual parts of his article are drawn within Engels's conception of the language, i.e. in connection with man's sociogenesis and in context to the social structure. At the same time the original Engels's ideas are confronted with some ideas of the contemporary representatives of bourgeois language sociology.
