Abstract
Marc Richir’s engagement with Eugen Fink’s Sixth Cartesian Meditation reveals a shared methodological concern with the limits of transcendental phenomenology. Both thinkers critique Husserl’s reduction for failing to adequately account for the distinction between mundane and transcendental attitude. Fink’s notion of a reduction of the sense of being closely parallels Richir’s hyperbolic epoché, both aiming to displace phenomenology’s ontological commitments in favor of a focus on its performance. A key point of divergence arises in their treatment of language. While Fink develops an architectonic model that attempts to sustain phenomenology’s methodological purity through systematic differentiation, Richir argues that this approach implicitly reinstates eidetico-logical presuppositions. He replaces Fink’s transcendental spectator with the concept of performing language, shifting the focus from theoretical predication to the dynamic constitution of sense formation. This study examines how Richir critically engages with Fink’s project, demonstrating that their differences are not oppositional but constitute a methodological reconfiguration of phenomenology’s scope and foundations.
