Abstract

Since capitalism operates independently from the individuals’ choices, it seems to acquire an ontological status by itself and seems independent from specific individuals. In order to refute the autonomy delegated to capitalism, we turn to the origins of the relationship between the individual and the economic system through the reading of Marx by Michel Henry, who isolated Hegel as the founder of Marxism. This study aims to investigate the Marxist thought from Henry’s perspective and its difference in understanding the relationship between the individual and the universal. On this issue, Henry works reversely on Hegel’s concept of the individual, as he does not conceive a formal universality, but a real universality that is no more than the sum of the parts. Such universality is precisely what allows us to deny the independence of the economic system from the individuals.
