AUC Philologica (Acta Universitatis Carolinae Philologica) is an academic journal published by Charles University. It publishes scholarly articles in a large number of disciplines (English, German, Greek and Latin, Oriental, Romance and Slavonic studies, as well as in phonetics and translation studies), both on linguistic and on literary and cultural topics. Apart from articles it publishes reviews of new academic books or special issues of academic journals.

abstract
The use of the word barbaros in the Greek literary texts spread to a great extent not until the 5th century B.C. when it was a consequence of the war conflict with the Persian empire. The antithesis of Greeks and barbarians, respectively of Europe and Asia, became very important theme in the literary works of the period. This article deals with this topic in Aeschylus’ Persae, in Herodotus’ History, in the Hippocratic treatise Airs, Waters, Places and in the tragedies of Euripides. Řekové a barbaři u řeckých autorů 5. století př. Kr. Výskyt slova barbaros v řeckých literárních textech se značně rozšířil teprve v 5. století př. Kr. v důsledku válečného konfliktu proti perské říši. Protiklad Řeků a barbarů, resp. Evropy a Asie, se stal velmi důležitým tématem v dobových literárních dílech. Tento článek se zabývá tímto námětem v Aischylových Peršanech, v Hérodotových Dějinách, v hippokratovském spisku O vzduchu, vodách a místech a v Eurípidových tragédiích.
