abstract

Enmeshment is a concept, introduced by Salvador Minuchin, which indicates a pathological dimension of close relationships. Current discourse shows insufficient consensus how to define enmeshment in relationships and what other phenomena it is connected with. Enmeshment was originally defined as an extreme value of cohesion but this assumption fails to research acknowledgement. Later research findings rather refer to mutual independence of cohesion and enmeshment. The aim of the article is to explore the relationship between enmeshment and cohesion. It seems that enmeshment occurs in close relationships (insofar connection with cohesion) but it is differently motivated and relates to other phenomena in the life of the involved people: while cohesive relationships occur together with a good adaptation of partners, enmeshment is associated with a broad spectrum of problems.
