abstract

We accept a loss in the number of graves in cremation cemeteries as a fact. The rate of loss has radically increased in comparison with 100 or 150 years ago. On the other hand we perceive inhumation cemeteries as less damaged. The reason for this must be because of the greater depth of the graves. In reality the depth of graves ranges widely and shallow ones are at a high risk of destruction by erosion or ploughing (or both). Despite this a number of studies when comparing cemeteries treat them as equally representative assemblages (comparison of goods, ages, gender).
