abstract
The article emphasises the significance of the relation of the fortified manor and its corresponding economic hinterland as well as the wider rural context. Using the example of the DMV Kři in Central Bohemia, it formulates the questions for further research. It notices the written sources that clarify the legal aspects of the beginnings of fortified manors. It provides insight into three archaeological excavations, which captured the transformation of a lightly protected curia into a fortified seat.
