abstract

The article outlines the current state of research of medieval house construction in rural Brandenburg. Especially in the last 20 years numerous excavations of settlements in the Berlin-Brandenburg area were carried out. As there are few archaeologically verifiable traces of ground-level constructions, such examples are being used from other areas within Germany as well as evidences from folklore and from remaining constructions of the same period. Furthermore the article shortly illustrates the formation and development of the settlements according to the current state of research. A second part deals with additional archaeological features of the settlements such as trenches surrounding plots or villages as well as wells. Finally the article discusses the question of tradition and/or innovation in house construction in connection with the process of inner colonization in the High Middle Ages.
