abstract
The article is concerned with change in the concept of action in sociological theory from its beginnings up to the present and systems theory. The author argues that while the systems concept of action in sociology, especially in the form of the theory of autopoeitic systems, has provided a skilful account of ever strengthening tendency to privilege the effectiveness of action, it has on the other hand become a basis for oversimplified ideas of social reality. The systems theory of action, by giving unqualified priority to the efficiency of action at the expense of other modes of action, overlooks the basic moral philosophical aspect of the question of the meaning of action that stands at the very source of the sociological question of action.
