abstract
In this paper, we examine the status, characteristics and uses of the prefixal elements relating to origin and nationality in Spanish. Their inventory in Spanish monolingual dictionaries is generally very incomplete and there are many inconsistencies in the classification of these forms: some are listed only as adjectives (used sometimes as nouns), while others are classified also as compounding elements or prefixes. Our opinion is that certain bound forms relating to origin and nationality do not differ in their structure and functions from the so-called prefixoids or neoclassical stems. Because of their adjectival origin and uses, some elements (primarily the very productive morpheme euro-) could theoretically be included in the inventory of standard prefixes; a solution that is facilitated also by the existence of the group of adjectival prefixes in the GDLE (1999) and the NGRAE (2009).
