abstract

The contribution focuses on a question that, for Fink, requires a peculiar phenomenological reduction, a kind of “reduction of reduction” (to refer to the language of the Sixth Cartesian Meditation), which goes back to the “situation of the situation” and highlights the limits of the “here and now” of any philosophising. The contribution consists of a reinterpretation of Fink’s thematic approach in the lecture Basic Problems of Human Existence (1955). In a discussion of Martin Heidegger’s ontological hermeneutics of facticity, the thesis is developed that where Heidegger poses the question of the meaning of being, Fink transforms this question into the question of the “whence” of being, of the meontic origin of everything in the realm of individuation. Fink thus shows that a fourth and a fifth dimension must be added to the three ecstasies of the temporality of existence, which refer to “space” and “possibility”, which (through the fundamental phenomena of death and play) not only refer to a “here” and a “now” of philosophising, but also to an impersonal dimension, i.e. to an absolute “not-here” and “not-now”.
