abstract

There is nearly no reference directly addressed from Emmanuel Levinas to Eugen Fink and vice versa (apart from Levinas’ verdict directed to Fink’s concept of play as example for the unethical consequences growing out of a phenomenology still oriented towards an ontological source). Yet, both of them challenged their phenomenological grounds, which might beg for a comparison on methodological grounds. However, what I am interested in, is to start a virtual dialogue between these two protagonists on a field, we might only discover today as Fink’s phenomenology of social relations is accessible once again to readers, after Fink himself had mostly developed it in oral lecture courses. Such a virtual dialogue might establish a ground for moving forth with phenomenological inquiry to what we could be able to conceptualize from the heritage of phenomenological thinking, whenever we understand Phenomenology itself as dialogical. Concepts of world, its relationality and its boundaries on the one hand, concepts of transcendence and infinity on the other hand, are examples for a field where Fink and Levinas might meet and get into a dialogue about our social relations, their ontological, anthropological and ethical implications.
