summary
Nonhuman Photography seeks a conceptual framework for understanding image media as well as their visuality and perception in a context where the human is absent as an object, actor, or addressee. In this respect, traditional theories of photography, which focus on indexicality or foster the conventional narrative of man against machine, are no longer useful. Therefore, Zylinska shifts her attention to the non-representational aspects of photographic creation. Through these, the author presents photography as a life-shaping force, a formative activity, and a medium that has the power to respond adequately to the extreme situation in which humanity and this planet find themselves.
