summary

Ian Shapiro, a contemporary American political scientist, defends the proposition that we should limit the principle of dominance in democracy, and shows how it is possible to practically pose resistance to dominance in domestic and foreign policy. He touches on the current discussion on electoral systems, the independence of the judiciary, the role of money in politics, minimum wage and the protection of minorities. In chapters devoted to international dominance crossing borders, he takes aim at the role of international institutions, speculates on military interventions intended to prevent genocide and ethnic cleansing, and points out the problems connected with promoting democracy abroad.
Based on his knowledge of past successful political campaigns, Shapiro explains how to create an effective political coalition and how to use it to achieve the ideal of non-dominance.
