summary

For the first time, this large monograph presents the engraver to a wider audience. Rentz came to Prague from Nuremberg in the early 1720s in order to create an extensive illustrative work for books published by F. A. Count of Sporck and in the Kuks cultural centre, side by side with Matyas Bernard Braun and Petr Brandl, became one of the best Czech baroque artists. Jiří Šerých follows the development and changes of Rentz's style in artistic cycles and in individual prints, records his work in the two decades following the count's death, compares the artist's quality in the Czech context, and confronts his illustrative work with the graphic production mainly from Germany and France. Rentz's work is represented by over 300 reproductions. The complete list of the artist's work, containing more than 700 items, in the second part of the book, will be helpful to collectors of graphic art.
