This collection of essays by Alessandro Portelli finally makes available to Czech readers his innovative approach to oral history, which makes use of both interdisciplinary and multicultural perspectives. Portelli examines cultural conflicts and the communication between social groups and classes in 20th-century industrial societies and identifies the ways in which individuals seek to create memories to be able to understand their life journey. It is based on field work and attributes substantial weight to verbal expression itself. For him, oral history is not the search for more authentic and direct experiences, but rather the perspective which draws our attention to the fleeting nature of historical truths as such.
