summary
The four scholars present a first extensive attempt to examine the relations between Czechoslovakia and Latin America during the Cold War. Considering the fact that there is no meta-literature (with the exception of papers published in journals and a very limited number of older publications), this text is based almost exclusively on primary resources, particularly from the Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Archives and the Security Services Archives. The research demonstrated the varying intensity of the Czechoslovak political and economic elites’ interest in the various countries in the region, with the most favoured being Brasil, Argentina, Mexico and after 1959 also Cuba. At the same time, the pragmatism of Czechoslovak foreign policy became apparent; although political and ideological priorities were formally emphasized, in reality Czechoslovakia also maintained the economically more advantageous economic relations with brutal military regimes, as was the case of Argentina.
