The book deals with a hitherto neglected topic: the impact of the imprisonment of a parent on a child (so-called invisible victim of crimes) and its well-being. One part of the book is devoted to the results of the unique research project Parenthood Behind Bars, which was carried out by a collective of authors so as to enable us to obtain a view into the fragile world of the children of convicted parents.
This research provides a complex view of the given topic. It investigates the experiences concerning parenthood on the part of parents during a period of imprisonment, their children and also persons taking care of these children. It describes what role should be played by the walls of a prison in the creation of the relationship between a child and its parent. It identifies the needs of these children as well as the impacts of the imprisonment of a parent on a child's well-being, resilience and its relationship with its parent. Along with this, the research brings answers to questions which have so far not been posed and presents approaches for supporting the children of imprisoned parents. These approaches are aimed not only at specialists from praxis, but also for all those who are trying to help the invisible victims of crimes to escape from the vicious circle of disregard, insufficient support and stigmatization.
