Each of us is a specific individual, living our own unique life and viewing the world from our own inner, subjective perspective. At the same time, however, we all have the ability to step back from this primary viewpoint and look at ourselves and the world “from nowhere.” Of course, it is not always easy to reconcile these two perspectives, and the conflicts between them raise difficult problems in all areas of philosophy. How can we integrate our subjective experience into the objective picture of the world developed by modern physics? How can we reconcile our inner sense of freedom with the external view from which our actions appear merely as part of the flow of events in the world? How can we come to terms with the fact that, from a cosmic perspective, all our ideals, interests, and values seem utterly meaningless? These and other questions, including the problem of mind and body, freedom and the meaning of life, but also scepticism, the objectivity of values, and the relationship between morality and the good life, are explored by the contemporary American philosopher Thomas Nagel in his most important work.
