summary
Battery of Language Diagnostic Tests is a set of standardized psychometric diagnostic tests for the assessment of language and pre-reading skills in children between the ages of 3 and 8.
It draws on the latest findings in psycholinguistics, developmental psychology, and special education. Its design strictly following the developmental continuity in the observed skills, the test battery represents the first tool of its kind created for the Czech context.
It facilitates the early detection of risks in language and literacy development and provides structured guidance on diagnostic conclusions as well as suggestions for remedial instruction and intervention strategies.
The test battery consists of a total of seventeen different subtests organized into two sections:
• a section with tests for the assessment of pre-reading skills (phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonological processes, such as rapid automatized naming);
• language section – subtests for the assessment of understanding vocabulary and grammar, production of grammatical constructions, and sentence repetition.
In addition, the test battery includes:
• guidelines containing theoretical assumptions, a description of the subtests, a standardization study, psychometric parameters, and, in particular, normative data presented in well-organized charts, tables, supplemented with practical tips on the interpretation of results (152 pages);
• guidelines for administering subtests, including previews of the respective answer sheets (116 pages);
• two books with visual stimuli for the administration of selected subtests (practical spiral bound books, 264 + 360 pages);
• a set of answer sheets (10 copies for each subtest);
• a summarizing answer sheet with an easy-to-use system for evaluating results, converting scores to standards, and interpreting results (10 copies).
The test battery has been standardized using a sample of nearly 900 child participants. Data needed for the verification of the reliability and construct validity of the subtests has been obtained as part of the standardization study.
The test battery is primarily intended for experts in clinical and counselling psychology, speech-language pathology, and special education. A license to use the tool can only be granted to participants having completed professional training. These sessions are organized by the authors of the test battery in collaboration with professional organizations, namely the Association of Speech-Language Pathologists of the Czech Republic and DYS-centrum Praha.
