summary
The third, revised edition of the successful publication by Jaroslav Kopáček, Jan Bednář, and Michal Žák (Karolinum, 2005; 2nd ed. 2019) introduces atmospheric phenomena that influence weather and are associated with severe or even extreme weather conditions. The book provides information about electrical discharges in the atmosphere, cloud electricity, lightning, the structure of storm clouds, the formation of hailstorms, whirlwinds, tornadoes, and other related phenomena. The authors also discuss climate change and the greenhouse effect in the Earth’s atmosphere.
Compared to the second edition, the final chapter, dealing with the presentation of meteorological information in today’s media, has been significantly expanded, reflecting the rapid innovative developments in digital technologies and social networks. In addition, explanations of several frequently used terms, such as polar circulation cell, polar cyclones, medicane, and Schumann resonances, have been newly included.
The text is supplemented with more than 50 illustrations.
