summary

Reflecting on the boundaries between philology, philosophy and poetry, Klossowski presents Nietzsche as a writer who thinks through even himself – his illusory “I” – as a field of instincts, thoughts and their mutual clashes. Klossowski weaves Nietzschean propositions such as “eternal recurrence” or “will to power” into the fabric of contexts and contradictions, from which they cannot really free themselves – hence the “vicious circle” in the title. This book, whose original version was first published in 1969 and which drew on a number of then little-known sources, fragments from the estate and from correspondence, stimulated renewed interest in Nietzsche’s work and strongly influenced many texts of modern philosophy.
