summary

Philosophy has traditionally been regarded as quintessentially European, and as such has represented the very core of the Western intellectual tradition. However, with Europe’s loss of its central position as a political and intellectual superpower, philosophy is compelled to find new approaches that will enable it to reflect on the position of humanity in the 21st-century world. Yuk Hui, a professor of philosophy at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, shows that in this situation, the only way is to move beyond the ideological dichotomy between East and West and embrace a state of intellectual homelessness — one that is not based on neutralising differences but rather becomes an opportunity for the individuation of thought.
