summary
In his monograph, Milan Hrdlička summarises his research findings and experience gained from many years of teaching practice. He reviews the notion of grammar, discusses selected grammatical approaches to describing natural language, and points out the particularities and advantages of didactic grammar. The author also deals with language code acquisition and the role of grammar in foreign-language teaching methods, especially in Communicative Language Teaching. He addresses the principles that guide the choice and ordering of chapters when teaching grammar, the issue of non-parallel grammatical categories and phenomena, opinions on the difficulty of certain chapters of Czech grammar from non-native speakers’ perspective, etc. The book also provides a well-readable, illustrative, and practically oriented explanation of difficult grammar chapters, e.g., the use of primary prepositions, the rules of Czech word order, or the distribution of (im)perfect verbs. The book is intended for anyone interested in Czech as a foreign and second language.
