summary
The publication aims to examine selected theoretical categories found in Levý’s seminal works from various perspectives, including quantitative analysis. The context in which Levý worked and the theoretical foundations that inspired him are discussed. The book also seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the connections between Levý’s theory and selected fields of Czech and international translation studies, such as the hermeneutic approach and the history of translation, including an overview of the reception of Levý’s ideas. A secondary goal of the book is to make Levý’s theory more accessible by taking a systematic approach to selected concepts.
The first key theme covers Levý’s theoretical categories and concepts. This section includes six chapters covering a textual and conceptual analysis of Levý’s seminal work The Art of Translation, issues involved in the translation process, and the critique and analysis of translations. It also features a chapter contrasting Levý’s theoretical categories and concepts with the neo-hermeneutic approach in translation studies. The second thematic focus is the history of translation, which is dealt with in the book’s concluding chapter. Specifically, it examines Levý’s essays on this topic, with an emphasis on the Baroque period.
Building on the research interest in Levý’s work, the book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the author’s selected theoretical categories, stressing the uniqueness of this founding figure of Czech translation theory.
