The book presents the author’s abundant findings and insights gained from his long-term teaching experience of foreign students of Czech studies, both in the Czech Republic and abroad. A fresh perspective on the Czech language through the lens of an original, often fundamentally different civilisational framework provides valuable insights and challenges that are unlikely to occur to a native speaker. The first section entitled “Language and nation” deals with the unresolved question of the contours of the Czech national language and other important and often overlooked topics (language and national character, patterns of Czechs’ speech behaviour). The final chapter, “Language and translation”, addresses the principal issues underlying this discipline with regard to artistic texts.

The entire book provides numerous contrastive views of the Czech language and the varied aspects of its use. It is intended for a broad audience of readers interested in Czech as a native, second, or foreign language.
