In this study, I analyze the concept of faith in Nicholas of Cusa’s De docta ignorantia, showing that faith figures not only as the content of religious conviction, but performs several interconnected epistemic functions. I argue that, in Nicholas’s view, faith is a precondition for cognition, a condition of its possibility, and a path to grasping absolute truth – namely, God. Based on this analysis, I propose a systematic typology of the functions of faith that traces the process of cognition from its outset to its highest object, which is God. The study thus offers a new interpretation of the relationship between faith and cognition in Nicholas of Cusa.
