abstract

The authors of the study – therapists of the Drop In Low-Threshold Centre – conducted a qualitative research, focused on analysing expressions of demotivation of addicted clients. The attention was paid to communication with a counsellor from the perspective of Transactional Analysis. The goal was to provide practical guidelines, increasing effectiveness of the communication. The chosen research method was a case study. The research sample consisted of fifty records of sessions with unmotivated clients. The authors analysed communication processes from the perspective of Transactional Analysis methods and concepts. They particularly searched for transactions (stimuli and responses) which illustrated expressions of an unmotivated client and then showed turnaround moments leading towards greater efficiency in communication. Results of the research showed that communication of unmotivated clients mostly stemmed from their subjective needs regardless of the social context and rules. The potential change in communication in terms of its higher efficiency lay in counsellor’s communication within rational conception of “here and now” situation.
