abstract
The Aesthetic Attitude and the Eternal Return of the Vergangenheitscharakter der Kunst: Danto and Patočka The article aims primarily to provide a comparison of two approaches to an important theme of Hegel’s aesthetic theory – namely, his idea that art belongs to the past (Vergangenheitscharakter der Kunst). The first part of the article presents Arthur C. Danto’s hypothesis on ‘the end of art’ and its relation to Hegel’s concept, and then points to problems that stem from it. The second part is an analysis of Hegel’s ideas in the thought of Jan Patočka. The comparison brings to the fore the theme of the aesthetic attitude as the chief distinguishing feature of the two interpretations. The author of the article argues that Danto’s negative approach to this concept leaves him at the level of the Hegel-inspired statement about ‘the end of art’, whereas Patočka is able to use the concept ‘to go beyond’ the limits of Hegel’s well-known thesis about art belonging to the past.
