abstract

“The impossible must be at the heart of the possible.” The present essay clarifies this Derridian conception through his rereading of Heidegger in 1992. The question of the demarcation between three modes of death – perish, demise and die – in Heidegger’s thought leads us to an intersection of the problematics of the “as” and of the “death”, insofar as the Dasein is described as being those who are able to understand their own death “as” death and this capacity allows it to be possible to die and not to perish or to demise. In this perspective, I scrutinise the Derridian way of revisiting Heidegger’s proposition of the “possibility of impossibility” as being to the death. If this proposition signifies the “existential possibility of existentiell impossibility”, it does not fall into any aporia, insofar as an ontico-ontological distinction can be presupposed. However, if this proposition can be replaced, as Derrida shows, by a certain “possibility as impossibility”, the same “as” that keeps it intact from the aporia can make it fall into the latter. The existentiell impossibility “as such” cannot appear without disappearing and thus introduces its indifference to the ontico-ontological distinction, i.e., the demarcation of the three modes of death. However, he does not finish with a simple impasse or impossibility of distinction. In my view, Derrida attempts to show that through this very indifference or impossibility, the subjectivity can at least “promise” a line of distinction that creates the possible in the impossible. The aim of this essay is to analyse the Derridian reinterpretation of Heidegger’s thought that generally converts it into the idea of impossibility taken as an intrinsic condition of a possibility, i.e., creativity.
