Jonathan Culler: Towards a Poetics of the Lyric

Jonathan D. Culler (* 1944) is one of the world’s most prominent literary theorists. Since the 1970s, Culler has consistently advanced the schools of structuralism and semiotics, and explored their influence on the deconstructionist and poststructuralist movements in literary criticism. His popular Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction has been published in more than a dozen languages. The goal of Theory of the Lyric, his most recent book to appear in Czech, is to approach lyric poetry in a flexible and non-dogmatic manner, taking into account the rich connections within the tradition of writing, reading, and listening to poetry in order to establish the unity of this poetic mode.
