Nakladatelství Karolinum organised two poetry themed discussions in English titled Poetic Crosscurrents CZ-UK: Translation, Collaboration and New Ways of Connecting and What is Czech poetry?
Poetic Crosscurrents CZ-UK: Translation, Collaboration and New Ways of Connecting
Poet and translator Tomáš Míka, British poet Jane Kirwan and poetry festival organiser Bernie Higgins discussed cultural challenges they have faced when collaborating on poetry translations from Czech to English and English to Czech, using illustrative examples from the works of Igor Malijevský, Tomáš Čada, Zuzana Lazarová, Tomáš Míka and Jane Kirwan. They also discussed their experiences of the poetry scenes in the UK and Czech Republic, as well as the phenomenal rise in interest in poetry and sales of poetry books in the UK (a 12% increase from last year). Is popularity bought at the expense of quality? The debate was moderated by Mike Baugh.
What is Czech poetry?
What are the challenges of translating Czech poetry into English? What is Czech poetry? Is it only in Czech, or can it be in English? What role does translation play? Ondřej Hanus, Tereza Reidlbauchová, Stephan Delbos, and Justin Quinn discussed some of these issues.
