At the moment when we read a poem or listen to it, something noteworthy takes place. Can we really say that we are those to whom it is addressed or for whom it is meant? Is not the relationship that it creates with us much more complicated, and this is so even in the case – or precisely in the case – when its text directly touches us? By means of detailed readings of the poetry of authors such as Rilke, Dickinson, Bishop and Ashbery, William Waters demonstrates the ways in which poems involve and incorporate us into a complicated game taking place between language and the world, in which we are only one of the actors and not necessarily the final addressee of the lyrical address.
