summary

This book is a translation of a sociology monograph from 1974, which analyzed the equality of women in Czechoslovakia compared to the Federal Republic of Germany. It was based on an analysis of and a reflection on many empirical studies and surveys, which took place between 1959 and 1972. Given the amount of time that has passed since then, further developments in handling the problem of the status of women in modern society as well as the fact that the book is now intended for Czech rather than German readership, called for an expansion in the form of explanatory and supplementary notes in the text and other additions pointing out different aspects of further developments or facts unknown to Czech readers.

Several of the scholar’s later studies, such as “Emancipation and Ownership” and “Feminist Forgetting,” were used to supplement the original text as they refer to new aspects of the women’s question, which were not obvious in the early 1970s. They also include the scholar’s text summarizing the development of the second women’s movement in the Federal Republic from its onset in the late 1960s to the unification of Germany in 1990. The book also includes Jiřina Šiklová’s text “A Few Notes on the Status of Women in the Czech Republic after the 1989 Revolution,” which summarizes the post-revolution development of the status of women in former Czechoslovakia.
