summary
This book presents the results of research conducted as part of the “Critical Areas in Elementary School Mathematics” project, under the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic in 2012–2014. The project’s goals included gathering and analyzing students’ methods used when solving tasks belonging among “critical areas” of elementary school mathematics. These are areas in which students often and repeatedly fail. In other words, areas they fail to master on a level that would allow for a productive development of their mathematical literacy and for their creative use in everyday life.
The research method selected was a clinical interview. Interviews with pupils were conducted during their work on carefully selected mathematical problems in “critical areas” or immediately after.
This book is intended for researchers in didactics of mathematics as well as educators of mathematics teachers and elementary school teachers. It will also be useful for doctoral students, teachers and students preparing for the teaching profession.
