summary

New religions are protest movements. They often originate due to dissatisfaction with the prevalent social code and their rise is often inspired by a charismatic leader. They may also express a disagreement with the existing ideology of one of the established religions. At the present time, there are thousands of them around the world. A majority of them soon disappear for the lack of disciples. This depends on how long the majority society takes to cease viewing a new religious group as “new” and to begin perceiving it as “established”.
This book focuses on the violent conflicts that occur between new religious movements and the surrounding community. The book presents twenty-four examples that help with understanding the reasons for the rise of these movements, their inner development and dynamics as well as their interactions with the surrounding environment. They provide a comprehensive overview of different types of violence from which the members of new religious movements suffer as well as those they commit themselves. Understanding these laws is important for religious studies, and it also offers readers an insight into the functioning of new religions as well as the majority society.
