summary

The book traces the emergence, development and current state of one of the relatively successful new religions of the 20th century – although the movement probably has no more than 50,000 members, they can be found almost everywhere in the world, forming a marginal but original and viable religious minority.
The Grail Movement not only provides a detailed account of the movement’s doctrine and religious practice, but also traces the development of the community of those who make up the movement. It places the formation and work of the founder and the emergence of his foundational writings in the literary, cultural, and religious context of German society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It also traces the conflicts that the new religious movement experienced in German interwar and postwar society. Furthermore, the book discusses the movement’s missionary work, which led to its spread to many different countries. Special attention is given to Czechoslovakia (and the Czech Republic) as an area where this mission was particularly successful.
