summary
In the Czech environment, this publication is the first comprehensive look at a number of the factors that affect the situation of male and female journalists and thus contribute to gender-based discrimination in this profession. Based on detailed research and critical reflection in foreign and domestic literature, it casts doubt on the deeply rooted perception that the increase in the number of women in the journalist profession and the improvement in the positions in the editorial office (for example from the point of view of attaining higher positions in the hierarchy) can in itself contribute to the transformation in the representation of women (and men) in the media or to change the character of the profession itself, especially for the benefit of women. It presents other structural and organizational influences which can, in comparison to gender, be more significant for the direction and likeness of the profession, and summarizes the results of the author’s own research, in which she focused on which factors are perceived as essential for their profession by male and female journalists in the Czech Republic.
