summary

Even with borders closed, the environment brings people together. As tensions between East and West began to ease in the late 1980s, a window of opportunity opened for regional exchange between South Moravia and Lower Austria, the environment becoming a shared platform for cooperation on the restoration of rural areas, nature conservation, and pollution control. The book emphasises the key role of local participants, the continuity of development before and after 1989, and the reasons why the close cooperation seen in the early 1990s did not evolve into a long-term partnership between the two regions. The book is a valuable addition to the transnational history of late socialism and transformation, bringing a regional and environmental perspective to the narrative.
