summary
The publication of this textbook was inspired by students’ positive responses to the lectures at the First Medical Faculty, Charles University. The book includes chapters on nutrition in endurance and strength athletes, nutrition for an overstrained articular system, the measuring of energy metabolism, evaluation of the athlete’s current diet and the related basics of clinical anthropology and sports somatotypology. The section on the prescription of sports activities helps students and athletes plan out the intensity, length and frequency of their sports activities, while the chapter on the effects of doping on health cautions against the use of illegal substances. The scholars present new information on fluid and mineral intake as well as on nutrition supplements which affect sports performance and thus often spark controversies and professional discussions. As the scholars tried to provide an impartial view of the supplements’ efficacy, they included an extensive list of quotations from the modern literature on the theme from around the world.
