summary
This monograph, First Study of the Old Testament, presents a systematic arrangement of basic information for Old Testament biblical study. It begins with a general introduction on the character of the Bible and continues with a special introduction into the individual parts and books of the Old Testament. The general introduction looks at the divine inspiration and canon of the Scripture, the environment and history surrounding its origin, the characteristics of the original text, its translation and interpretation. The special introduction consists of two parts, the first of which is dedicated to the parts of the Hebrew Bible in this order: Law (Torah, Pentateuch), the “Former” and “Latter” Prophets, and the Writings. The second part contains the Deuterocanonical books in this order: historical, wisdom, prophets, and “new historical.” The basic characteristics of the individual books are organically supplemented by brief exegeses of certain key areas. The author starts from the Catholic view of the Scripture, but strives for comprehensibility for people of other faiths or even atheists – he places emphasis on generally human topics and on the Jewish division of the canon. It offers readers the inclusion of his previous research on the Old Testament into a comprehensive interpretation of the Scripture, and also a possible basis for further more detailed studies of the Bible.
