summary

The book focuses on selected periods of 19th-century Jewish culture and literature that have not received much attention. Drawing on a wide range of sources including poetry, prose, newspapers, travelogues, tourist guides, chapbooks, and revolutionary pamphlets, the author examines both Jewish reflections on their own positions as well as changing attitudes towards Czech Jews in the period between the 1820s and 1880s. The book presents interpretations and reinterpretations of literary and journalistic works by Ján Kollár, Karel Hynek Mácha, Siegfried Kapper, Karel Havlíček Borovský, Leopold Kompert, Jan Neruda, Josef Jiří Kolár, and other nowadays forgotten authors. By combining textual analyses and detailed contextualizations, the book offers the reader illuminating insights into the history of the Jews in Bohemia.
